so i’ve been thinking about this sarah-palin-as-v.p.-nominee situation.
at first i thought it was kind of an ingenius move on john mccain’s part, to pick a woman that would potentially garner him hillary clinton’s votes… but that was a short-lived thought. now i’m just offended on behalf of all the people who considered (or who are still considering) voting for him.
john, there are a lot of dumb people in the u.s. who will vote for any woman, no matter who she is, but do you really think that the intelligent among clinton’s constituents would find sarah palin an equal to the brilliant and incomparable hillary? and happy 72nd birthday yesterday, by the way, but do you think no one has thought about the high chance of you dying while in office (if you were fortunate enough to get elected) and that sarah palin does not have near the experience to step in as president if you kick the bucket? huh?
i will say, however, that sarah palin is pretty cutesy. i don’t think that will work in your favor, though.

so i had a weird and deeply personal question posed to me (sort of inappropriately) via text message today:
“if you had to kill yourself, what song would you play? the only rules are you cannot pick a beatles or rilo kiley song. and would your hypothetical way of ending yourself have an impact on your song choice?”
i’ve thought a lot about how i would kill myself if i felt so driven to do so, and the only way i can see myself extinguishing my own life is by running my car in my garage until i asphyxiate. all of my other options require more trouble than they’re worth, in my opinion… like buying a gun to shoot myself or climbing on top of a building to jump off of. i don’t want to exert myself in my last moments. i would want it to be familiar and easy. i’d get in my car, like i’ve done a thousand times before, and start the engine and just wait. i’d probably be smoking a cigarette with the windows rolled down.
with this idea in mind for my hypothetical suicide, i’ve assembled a top ten list of songs that i would want to die listening to.
1. ‘alison’ by elvis costello
2. ‘i’ll be yr bird’ by m. ward
3. ‘lover you should have come over’ by jeff buckley
4. ‘the queen is dead, take me back to dear old blighty’ or ‘how soon is now’ by the smiths
5. ‘monument’ by mirah
6. ‘hotel chelsea nights’ by ryan adams
7. ‘vienna’ by billy joel
8. ‘jesus etc.’ by wilco
9. ‘rebel rebel’ by david bowie
10. ‘racing like a pro’ or ‘fake empire’ by the national
11. ‘all the young dudes’ by mott the hoople
obviously, the person who posed this question to me knows me well enough to know that i live the beatles and breathe rilo kiley. if these two weren’t disqualified, here are some more options.
the beatles:
‘happiness is a warm gun’
‘oh darling!’
‘you never give me your money’
’strawberry fields forever’
and
rilo kiley:
‘we’ll never sleep (god knows we’ll try)’
‘picture of success’
‘with arms outstretched’ [which, in all likelihood, would be the song that ushered me into death]
on a happier note, i’m going to see cansei de ser sexy and tilly & the wall the day after i get back to seattle. score.

so i went to church with my mom tonight, and her pastor told a little anecdote about how he had just returned from seattle, and that seattle is the u.s. city that has the least amount of people who attend church.
this makes sense to me… maybe because i’m one of those people that live in seattle and don’t attend church. i know a lot of spiritual/spiritually-minded people that live in seattle, but none of them seem too keen on going to church… not that they deny that church is important or necessary, just that they don’t want to go themselves. in theory, church is good. people ruin it. this is a generalization probably, but seattle-ites appear to me to be very intuitive when it comes to human interaction, and very sensitive to insincerity. and to make another broad generalization, there are a lot of “christians” who are performers, and who give genuine christians a bad name and leave a bad taste in non-christians’ mouths. in my recent church-going experiences, it all just feels pretty fake to me, like a show is being put on to disguise things/people that aren’t palatable. and singing worship songs is empty for me because the words are not real to me, even though every time i’m in a church i pray to God that the words will be real to me. maybe i’m just a pessimist.
i also read somewhere that seattle has the highest percentage of people who hold advanced degrees, making it the smartest city in the u.s.
maybe there’s a correlation between these two statistics?
